How to Become a Winning Poker Player
To consistently be a winning poker player, you need to adapt your strategy. You need to learn new tricks. You can do this by reading poker strategies but there is no point just reading it. You have to integrate it into your poker game.
If you are playing poker online, playing for play money is all fine and well when you are learning the basics. I highly recommend starting at play money at first but if you want to get better, you have to play better players. You will find the better players at the real money poker tables. There is no need to jump into the $1000 games. In fact, if you do, you will likely blow your bankroll in a very short period of time, learning very little other than knowing you are not ready to quit your job and go pro. I would suggest playing at 50c/$1 ring games or $5/$10 small tournaments. There are an abundance of decent experienced journeymen at these tables. You will likely struggle against them. Nonetheless, this is a great starting point.
So what now? You are mixing it with experienced players. How do you improved you game enough to become a winning poker player? Well start on these tables playing a fairly true game. Just take the bluffing out of your game completely. You may be thinking. That's not poker. Well you are right in a sense but what you are learning is to play a solid strategy. You are doing the mechanics, which every aspiring poker player needs to learn, many neglect to their cost. Keep doing this until you feel comfortable with the game. You will soon notice that you are picking up chips from those who love to bluff and don't have the savvy to watch out for tight players (you are one of these players). You will also notice that when you get a great hand, you cannot seem to get a decent pot against some of the more experienced players. They see you raise and automatically know you have a hand.
Now you may be slightly a winning poker player using this strategy but you won't progress too far. You have picked up a valuable skill though, you have learned to read other players, you have learned that other players have put a read on you and your style has become predictable. Now it is time to develop your new found skill. How do you do this? Well that's where the experience comes in. You have learned how to read players. Now you must adjust your poker strategy to suit different types of players. So let's put them into categories.
1) How to play against a reckless player.
Just play great hands against them. They are easy to beat. You just wait for them to make mistakes. Its not rocket science. You are just sitting back, letting them win small pots with their crazy bluff and over raises. When you pick up a great hand, lure them into big pots and get their pot steals back with interest.
2) How to play against a tight player
Play a little looser. Keep picking up small pots. When they raise, it's generally an easy fold. These players are fairly predictable. This was the predictability I advise to start out with, but it was for a reason. It was to educate yourself on how to put a read on different styles of players. Some players play this way day in, day out. They too become easy opponents to beat over the long run.
3) How to play a strong player.
Now this is poker. A strong player will look for patterns and tells in your game. He is thinking why you played a hand in a particular way. Against him you need to mix up your game. Throw in the occasional bluff. Play the same kind of hand differently. When you think he has got a read on your play. Do the opposite. Be careful, he is dangerous.
Now you have attained the skills to be a winning player but as I said at the start "poker takes a matter of minutes to learn but a lifetime to master." Now it is time to analyze every bit of every play. Dissect it. Study it and use it to beat the strong player. You are now learning the true meaning of poker. Anyone who tells you poker is all about the luck of the cards are kidding themselves. They will never be good poker players. You have a chance. You are now learning every day and acting on your new found skills. You are ready to take it to the next level. People will now label you a good player; some will know you are a good player but do nothing about it. How can they? They have not bothered to go through the initial learning process
Good luck. World class players, such as 11 time world champion Doyle Brunson are still learning. If you stop with your education and settle for that, sure you will be a winning poker player but you will never hit the big time. It's no shame being good journeyman but if you love poker like many of us do, you will love the fact that you can outsmart great players and to do this you need to keep learning and improving your game.
Every player has their strengths and weaknesses. I suggest you work on your weaknesses first. Why? Because your weaknesses are where you make your biggest improvements. It could be that you are weak when it becomes to protecting your blinds. You are losing out on people picking off your blinds and draining your bankroll slowly. You are already a winning poker player so why don't you add to your bankroll by ironing out your weaknesses?
