Stud Poker Variations

best online poker guide

5 Card stud is the simplest form but it is a little too rigid for most poker players but there are some interesting variations of the game. Stud poker is more commonly played during home games.

Learn Some Stud Poker Variations

California high/low split

Played with a single joker, used as a bug. High hand and low hand split the pot.An a-5 low hand is used to determine low. An 8-high or better low is required to win low. If there is no low hand then the high hand takes the entire pot. Played cards speak, that is, players do not declare whether they intend to win the high or low half of the pot (or both); they simply show their cards and the best hands win. Because ace-to-five low values are used, a hand such as a low straight or flush can win both high and low, called "scooping" or "hogging" the pot.

High/low with declare

This game is played similar to other versions of five-card draw only the second betting round and before the showdown, there is a declaration stage. Each player takes a couple of chips from his stack and puts them under the table, then raises a clenched fist hiding either

No chips - The player intends to win the low half of the pot

One chip - The player intends to win the high hand

Two chips- The intends to win both pots

When all players have done this they then expose their chips. If any player shows two chips, and his hand is the best low and the best high, he collects the lot. Otherwise, half of the pot goes to the player with the highest hand who declared high, and the other half to the player with the lowest hand of those who declared low. There is no qualifying hand to win either high or low, and if no one declares in one direction, the full pot is awarded in the other A player who declares for the entire pot must win both ends outright, with no tied hands. For example, if a player declares the entire pot, known as scoop and has the lowest hand but only ties for high, he gets zilch. Assuming that the other player has declared low, he will win with the same high hand wins the high half of the pot and the next-lowest hand wins low. If no-one else declared low, the high hand who declared high wins the entire pot.

Double-draw and Triple-draw

This game is simply played with two or three draw stages and has either three or four betting rounds. Often played is Double-draw California lowball and Triple draw lowball which is played either with ace-to-five or deuce-to-seven. Four-before On the first deal of Four-before only four cards are dealt to each player. A betting round ensues, then each player receives one more card which completes his hand to five cards. Then the final betting round before the eventual showdown.

Johnson or Jacks back

Played with one joker. The game must be played with antes and no blinds. All players are dealt five cards. The first betting round starts with the player to the dealer's left, who has the opportunity to check or open with anything he chooses. If any player opens, the game continues just like a standard five-card draw poker game. If the first round is checked around the table with no-one committing, then the player to the dealer's left may now open if he opts to do so, but the game has now switched to California lowball.

Q-Ball

This game is played with one joker .Q-Ball is a lowball game which combines various draw games. It is normally played with three blinds The deck contains one joker. All players are dealt three cards, then a round of betting beginning with the player immediately after the big blind who has the option to call, raise, or fold to the big blind. He has no option to check it. Next round, each player collects a fourth card, followed by a another round of betting . No checking is allowed on this round either. The first to play must always open or fold, this is followed by a third betting round. Only now is checking is permitted. To conclude each player draws as in normal draw poker then completes with a fourth and final round of betting, which leads to the showdown followed by a fourth betting round and showdown. An A-5 is used to determine the low values.

Shotgun or Skinny Minnie

This is another draw game but plays a lot like a stud game. Initially, five cards are dealt to all players, then their is a betting round followed by a draw. Now, instead of a second round and showdown, there is a rollout phase which begins with the players sorting their five cards in any order they chose, putting all cards face down in front. Each player's top card is now turned over. This is followed by a betting round. Then each player turns over his second card, followed by a betting round. Then a third card is shown, followed by a betting round, a fourth card revealed, a betting round, and finally a showdown. The High/Low variation is known as Skinny Minnie, otherwise it is referred to as Shotgun.
