Reasons For And Against Poker
There are many reasons as to why people play poker. They play to for general pleasure or to pass the time. It is a great escape for many. Poker can also the basic tools for a better understanding of society. they also take up the game to earn a living. Believe it or not, many high flying career people have given up great careers to earn the bigger buck, playing poker.
On the social aspect, poker can be a great experience. Many bonding sessions have resulted in a Monday night poker home game. The poker is the theme of the night but centrally it is more of a beer and bragging session with your friends. Who won last week...Who's going to wipe the floor with everyone this week, etc. When we play our home games, bragging rights is all that matters. Years back we made a pact to keep the stakes low to maintain the friendly, non tense atmosphere. Informal chat and beer drinking is the theme of the night and generally we all leave the night a bit worse for ware but happy.
Many people are competitive by nature. Poker is an ego sport. You need a big ego to be the best. you don't have to be brash about it but you need to feel confident in yourself that you can beat the opposition. Along with the ego, you also need the skill and a touch of luck along the way. When I play online, its funny to see those players who seem to have the ego but lack the skill. I think these people are too busy typing to criticize others. They don't realize they are missing vital elements of the game. I love taking money off these people although it can be a little frustrating when these same players get that extra element, the bit of luck to snatch your chip stack from under your nose. That's poker, I guess. I don't worry too much about it. These players have confirmed the egotistical ideas of being the greatest, and by winning the pot they have justified their poor play. If they hang around the table long enough, the chip will generally start coming back.
Although poker is a fantastic game to play, if you are playing for money make sure you don't forget you are playing for hard cash. It doesn't matter how good a poker player you are. Make sure you never put more money on the table than you are comfortable losing. everyone has their losing days. I keep a comfortable bankroll to fall back on but instead of laying the rest on the tables, I use this cash to buy things for the house, holidays, etc.
Poker is a great educational tool. It can help you to read body language. You will have a better judgment of people if you apply what you learn at poker and apply it to civilian life. You will also notice a marked improvement in your logical reasoning and strategic approach to problems. On top of this, poker cab be a great confidence and character builder.
If you apply yourself, you could be one of the lucky ones who make money from this great hobby. most people start off playing for fun, but when they realize there is money too be made playing poker.
Most people play poker for fun, but some make considerable money at it. Of course, these people are few and far between. Not everyone can make a lot of money from poker. Nevertheless, the desire to win more is definitely a reason to improve your poker skills.
Poker is a peer to peer game, meaning you are pitting your skills against other like minded players. My Dad once said to me "Son, if you are ever going to gamble, gamble on yourself." I am not going to tell him this, but he was right. I have tried betting on the horse, roulette, you name it. All to no avail. Why? Because I am betting against a bookmaker. The odds are always stacked against me or they wouldn't be doing their jobs. Poker is a skill game, you can learn, and educate yourself to become a profitable poker player. If you study the form in the horses, so do millions of others. They all have a losing season. It is almost impossible to beat unless you have insider information. If you compare it to poker, the insider information is the other players tells, your knowledge of the game and your apprenticeship is time and application. in poker you can be a winner in the long run.
If you have a gambling problem, I would urge you not to play. The chances are, you are impulsive by nature and wont adhere to basic bankroll strategy and move up the stakes too quickly to chase that big win. As a heavy gambler in the past, I took the opposite approach. I played, i loved the game but lost my money. I saw how skillful the game was and decided I wanted more. I stuck to the small stakes and studied like a maniac until I was comfortably winning a few dollars each day. I moved up another level and did the same. My judge was my winnings. If I move up a level and lost half my bankroll, I would just move back down a level and study why i couldn't win. Then I would try again. It's a game of study, improve, fail. If you keep repeating this process you will eventually succeed. remember never to play with more than 10% of your bankroll at the table at any given time. If you find yourself losing consistently, you are playing at too high a level for your ability.
