Pineapple - Crazy Pineapple - Tahoe Holdem
Pineapple
Pineapple is similar to Holdem in using a three-card flop on the board, a fourth boardcard, and then a fifth boardcard.
Each player is dealt three holecards instead of the normal two at the start. One of these cards is discarded before the flop in regular Pineapple. or after the flop in Crazy Pineapple, which is the more common version).
The betting is the same as Holdem. At the showdown, a player can use any combination of his remaining two cards and the boardcard's. A player who still has three cards in his hand at the showdown has a dead hand.
Rules of Pineapple
All the rules of Holdem apply to Pineapple. The discarding of the third card, and when it occurs, is the only difference.
Crazy Pineapple
Crazy Pineapple is usually played high-low split, 8-or-better.
A player may use any combination of two holecards and the five boardcard's for the high hand and another (or the same) combination for the low hand.
If there is no qualifying hand for low, the best high hand wins the whole pot.
Each player is dealt three cards face-down (pocket cards)
First betting round
Dealer turns over three community boardcard's (the flop) face-up
Second betting round
All players must discard ONE pocket card
Dealer turns over 1 more community boardcard (the turn)
Third betting round
Dealer turns over 1 final community boardcard (the river)
Final betting round
Showdown
At the showdown for Crazy Pineapple, players may use either
Both remaining pocket cards & three boardcard's
One remaining pocket card & four boardcard's
All five boardcard's (playing the board)
Extra strategy is involved in Pineapple. For example, you must sometimes decide whether to discard your current "best hand" after the flop in order to potentially draw to an even better hand such as a flush or a straight!
Betting Structure for Crazy Pineapple
There are four possible betting rounds in Crazy Pineapple, shown in the rules above. Each bet and raise during the first two rounds is set at the lower limit of the stakes structure.
For example in a $5/$10 game, all bets and raises are $5 for the first two rounds (after pocket cards are dealt and after the flop). Remember, all players must discard ONE pocket card after the second betting round.
Betting and raising during the last two rounds is set at the higher limit of the stakes structure. Same $5/$10 example; all bets and raises are $10 for the last two rounds (after the turn and after the river).
The maximum allowable number of bets per player during any particular betting round is four. This would consist of (1) a bet, (2) a raise, (3) a re-raise, and (4) a cap.
The term cap is used to describe the 3rd raise in a round since betting is then capped and can not be raised anymore. Once the pot is capped, players will have only the option of calling or folding.
Tahoe
In Tahoe, players keep all three cards through showdown, but may not use all three of them to make a hand. Each player may use none, one, or two cards from his hand, combined with those on the board, to make his final five-card hand. This version is also called "Lazy Pineapple".
Crazy Pineapple and Tahoe are usually played high-low split.
STRATEGY TIPS
To be successful at the game of Pineapple, players need to develop highly detailed strategies. They have to learn when to discard their hand, and what makes a good hand. Discarding the wrong hand can lead to you losing the game, so timing and choices are crucial. You have to make a decision, and be able to live with the consequences. Learn from your mistakes, and watch the other players so that you can learn from theirs.
Some seasoned players will suggest that the more cards you have in your hand, then the fewer hand you should participate in. But each player has to determine their own strategy that works best for them.
