Poker Game Play Overview
The poker game played by most today, is Texas Holdem. Most forms have similar rules and if you learn one form of poker, it is easy enough to pick up the basics of another form fairly quickly.
Poker is played in a multitude of variations, but most follow the same basic pattern of play. The right to deal each hand typically rotates among the players and is marked by a token or plastic button called a dealer button or buck. In a standard casino the house dealer handles the cards for each hand, but a button (typically a white plastic disc) is still rotated clockwise among the players to indicate a nominal dealer to determine the order of betting. Although in some smaller casinos the players may deal themselves until the final table where a professional dealer takes over.
For each hand, two or more players are required to make forced bets to create an initial stake for which the players will contest. Sometimes at the later stages of a tournament all players are required to post an additional small anti to speed up the conclusion of the contest. There are tables which may have a designated betting stake ie fixed $5 tables, or other tables may have multiple. For example, a limit table will have blinds pre set up, and no bet may excede the big blind. In a no limit table, you may bet all your chips at any time during the hand. The dealer shuffles the cards, he cuts, and the appropriate number of cards are dealt to the players one at a time in a clockwise manner. Cards may be dealt either face-up or face-down, depending on the variant of poker being played. For example in holdem players receive 2 cards face down. After the initial deal, the first of what may be several betting rounds begins.
Between rounds, the players' hands mature in some way, often by being dealt extra cards or exchanging cards previously dealt. At the end of each round, all bets are gathered into the main pot. This is accummulated & any player who drops out the betting forfeits the potential share of the pot.
At any time during a betting round, if a player makes a bet, opponents are required to fold, call or raise. If one player bets and no opponents choose to match the bet, the hand ends immediately, the bettor is awarded the pot, no cards are required to be shown, and the next hand begins. The ability to win a pot without showing a hand makes bluffing possible. Bluffing is a primary feature of poker (although many vovices bluff a little more that they should), one that distinguishes it from other vying games and from other games that make use of poker hand rankings.
At the end of the last betting round, if more than one player remains, there is a showdown, in which the players reveal their previously hidden cards and evaluate their hands. The player with the best hand according to the poker variant being played wins the pot.
The most popular poker variants are as follows:
Draw poker
Players each receive five — as in five-card draw — or more cards, all of which are hidden. They can then replace one or more of these cards a certain number of times.
Stud poker
Players receive cards one at a time, some being displayed to other players at the table. The key difference between stud and 'draw' poker is that players are not allowed to discard or replace any cards.
Community card poker
Players combine individually dealt cards with a number of "community cards" dealt face up and shared by all players. Two or four individual cards may be dealt in the most popular variations, Texas hold 'em and Omaha hold 'em, respectively.
Here is an example of how the most popular community card game Texas Holdem works.......At the start of each hand all participating players are given two cards face down; these cards are known as their hole or pocket cards. Do not let anyone else know what you have until after the game has been played. I've played a few online games when a novice player has typed that he folded 2-4 when the flop just dealt A-3-5 giving him a straight. The knowledge of his two cards can affect the outcome of the game for the remaining players. Don't do it!!! Just stick to the essential guide of a living playing, poker professional.
During play of the hand, a total of five additional cards are exposed in the center of the table. These cards are known as community cards because everyone has equal right to use these cards to add value to their hands. . If the best five-card hand consists of the five cards on the board, this will be your hand. Your pockets cards only matter if one or both of them improve what is on the board. The community cards are dealt out in three stages, leaving five cards face up creating the board . Each stage of dealing has a different name, and prior to each stage there is a round of betting. There is a fourth and final round of betting after the last card.

The hands are ranked in the order they are because of the relative probabilities of their being dealt, with rarer hands ranking above more common hands. In all poker games, if more than one player remains after the last betting round, remaining players expose and compare their hands to determine the winner or winners. This is called the showdown. To win any part of a pot, a player must show all of his cards faceup on the table, whether they were used in the final hand played or not. Cards speak for themselves: the actual value of a player's hand prevails in the event a player mis-states the value of his hand.Because exposing a losing hand gives information to an opponent, players may be reluctant to expose their hands until after their opponents have done so and will muck their losing hands without exposing them.
