Basic Poker Tips for Newbies
I have beaten a few pros online but I know from experience if I played them all day long it could prove a costly education...
Now here is a tip that many few new poker players seem to apply. It is so simple you might think it is not worth mentioning but you should put a sticky reminder on your computer and apply it. Your skill level will increase instantly.
Be patient. Be selective with your choice of starting hands. Your odds of winning in the long run will increase dramatically.
So you may be thinking, I has 2-7 offsuit and flopped a full house. So What? Most of the time you would have paid into the pot and lost, flittering away valuable chips. Get that loose play out of your system and you will be heading on the right track.
Watch others play around you. Do they play tight or loose? If they are loose, don't bluff. If they are tight, throw in the occasional bluff to steal the pot... If a tight player stays in the pot be weary, they are likely to have a monster hand so be prepared to fold.
Limit your bluffing. People who bluff a lot are easily spotted. Let them win the small pots and take them out when the big pots appear.
I busted a guy when we were playing heads up one day. He won about 20 hands, I won 3, but the hands I won got me all the chips. He was just consistently over raising and stealing all my blinds until I landed a few good hands & just called him down. Yes my play was predictable but he didn't understand that basic principle.
AA is a great hand preflop but it rarely holds up if there are 5 players in the pot. Get a good amount of chips in preflop to limit the amount of callers. It will reduce the chance of players picking up 2 pair, etc. There are several combinations in poker. It's your job to limit another player's chance of hitting their cards. Bet enough to take the value out of a chaser calling you...
KK is also a great hand but if an ace appears on the flop, don't be afraid to fold it. Many players hog aces, so if there are a few players in the pot, the likelihood is that someone is beating your kings. This principle applies to all pocket pairs when the board is showing overcards. Take a note of how the betting unfolds. If someone bets big, they have usually landed top pair.
Going on Tilt. If you find yourself betting and calling silly plays because you lost a decent hand you felt you should have won, you are on Tilt. Bad Beats are a part of poker. If you cannot control your emotions after a bad beat. Take a break to recompose yourself. If you are in a tournament, play very tight until the steam stops coming out of your ears and get back on the rollercoaster when you are mentally prepared again.
Remember, poker is a game. It is a journey. Be patient. Be focused. . Win the pots that count and let the mugs fight out the others.
